To such conclusions scientists have analysed samples of primary crust, extracted in the Australian region of Jack Hills. This area has traces of active volcanism: the oldest rocks were thrown to the surface. The water content of the latter, as well as how it penetrated into the minerals, particularly interested the researchers. After studying the chemical and isotopic composition of zircons, the experts were able to establish the date of interest.
