The innovative Kenworth SuperTruck 2 truck was unveiled at the Las Vegas show, surprising visitors with its efficiency. The truck was the company’s response to the US Department of Energy’s call to increase the efficiency of commercial transport without abandoning diesel as the main fuel. The new truck’s powertrain shows wonders of economy, offering diesel consumption of only 18.4 litres per 100 kilometres driven.

The designers have also worked on the layout of the machine, reducing its weight by a solid 3221 kilograms. This was achieved by using lighter tyres, new materials and design solutions. The powertrain is a tandem of PACCAR MX-11 diesel engine and TX-12 gearbox. A 48-volt electric generator is the basis for a mild hybrid system that uses regenerative braking for charging. This system ensures that the truck’s auxiliary systems are not powered by the main engine. During bench testing, the engine demonstrated an efficiency of 55.7 per cent.
